Seeing The Unseen

MORNING DEVOTION -SEEING THE UNSEEN

by Jonathan Cassel

I remember one day while I was working, I looked up and suddenly realised everything I was doing in my life not only had an end, but it was an end without reward. A daunting realisation! Essentially I was treading water and became aware I couldn’t do it forever.

My whole life was the sum total of… me. On top of that, I realised I was receiving my reward in full. This was it. This was what the world had to offer. And it was… to be honest… empty and at best a fleeting pleasure I was not going to be maintaining.

I clearly remember thinking, this is not enough anymore. I couldn’t seem to find anything in this world that was of the same quality as my own heart. But I knew I needed to. Just like someone that’s thirsty knows they need a drink.

Spiritually I became aware that I needed Living Water.

I would later read where C. S. Lewis said it exactly how I experienced it:

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

I now see that it was an act of the Holy Spirit on my life, which I am so thankful for. Because had He not intervened I would have continued on that path, the path the proverb spoke of…

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

Proverbs 14:12

Thank God for eyes that see and ears that hear! For a discerning and humble heart that understands that Jesus is the Way.

2 Corinthians 4:18 came alive for me that day.

“We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

I went on to wrestle with this. But it never left me.

How can someone see what is unseen? How do I fix my eyes on the eternal, when everything around me is perishing? What am I meant to look at!?

I had this internal war inside me. My mind couldn’t navigate a sure pathway, yet my heart craved eternal things. I was being taken deeper spiritually, out where I couldn’t stand mentally.

And eventually I yielded my mind to my heart and discovered I could actually see better with the eyes of my heart than I could with my physical eyes. Praise God.

My physical eyes were only seeing the surface, however the eyes of my heart were seeing the root. As God’s word says, the seen was made by the unseen.

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Hebrews 11:3

So it was by faith, of the heart, that I was able to see what I couldn’t see before, and understand what I couldn’t understand before. I found it was specifically by the love of God and by meekness that this vision became more and more clear. Seeing the unseen is natural inside God’s love.

So I encourage you, brothers and sisters, to trust your Creator for eyes that see. For we are entirely dependent on an ever-faithful God. We don’t make our hearts take their next beat. It is not by our will that they beat. It is by His design. If we need Him for our heartbeat, we certainly need Him for our vision.

The Bible says:

“For in him we live and move and have our being.”

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for eyes that see and ears that hear. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on what is unseen. Help me keep my eyes fixed on You, Lord. I’m so thankful that Living Water is available to me, and that You have not left me alone but have supplied all my needs at Calvary—including my sight. For You said, Lord,

“For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”

John 9:39

Amazing grace… how sweet the sound… that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found… Was blind… but now I see.

in Jesús precious name

Amen

EVENING SCRIPTURE

Tonight spend some time with the Holy Spirit meditating on 2 Cor 4:18, “We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Remember when you meditate, roll the words over in your heart, ask Holy Spirit to give you deeper heavenly revelation.  Actually talk to the Holy Spirit about the verse. Thank Yahweh for His word and thank Jesus for making it alive to you through the cross.
